Soccer Ball Size Breakdown

When it comes to soccer balls, some are better than others. Sure, there are many colors and materials to choose from, but sizing is one of the most significant differences between soccer balls. A six-year-old youngster will probably enjoy soccer more if the ball is proportionate to their size rather than an adult-sized ball. However, this variant serves a purpose in that it allows more people to have the same amount of enjoyment and excitement while playing the game.

The smallest soccer ball is 1, and the largest is 5, with 1 being the smallest and 5 being the largest. As seen in the diagram below, each has its dimensions and is best suited to a particular drill, age group, or league.

SIZES 5 AND 6

Soccer balls of size 5 are recommended for players aged 12 and up, including adults and pros. They measure 27′′-28′′ in circumference and weigh 410-450 kilos. The best soccer balls in this size category will bear the “FIFA Inspected” or “FIFA Approved” stamp for match play, indicating that they have been thoroughly tested for circumference, roundness, rebound, weight, water absorption, pressure loss, shape, and size retention. Because these “FIFA Inspected” soccer balls are more expensive, some people may only use them for match play.

4 SIZES

Youth soccer players aged 8 to 12 primarily use a size 4 soccer ball. A size 4 ball has a circumference of 25′′-26′′ and a weight of 350-390 grams. This size reduction is advantageous for this age group since it helps players become more familiar with their skill set. Players this age, for example, may find it difficult to practice their dribbling skills or ball control if they use a size 5 ball, which may be too huge and heavy for effective training.

SIZES 3 AND 4

A size 3 soccer ball is recommended for youngsters aged 8 and under. This soccer ball size is the lowest in competitive play, measuring 23′′-24′′ in circumference and weighing around 300-320 kilos. This little youth ball is an excellent choice because it develops proper ball handling in children and is proportioned appropriately for most children of this age.

SIZE ONE

Size 1 soccer balls have a circumference of 18′′-20′′ and are often known as “minis.” While some people may benefit from skill training with these sized soccer balls, they are primarily used for enjoyment and collection. For convenience and collectability, many souvenir balls with player logos or club graphics will be size 1.

Finding the proper soccer ball size for your age group might be helpful, but keep in mind that league requirements can affect the size. To ensure that you’re buying the appropriate ball, verify with your coach or a league official.
